Description of the Planning Area The John Day Planning Area (see Maps 1 and 2), which is part of Oregon’s Burns District, comprises those public lands within Grant County and a northern portion of Harney County.

The planning area is bordered on the north and east by the Vale District and on the west by the Prineville District. The purpose and need for revising the Rio Grande forest plan is primarily the age of the current plan and a significant changed condition on the forest.

According to the National Forest Management Act, forest plans are to be revised on a 10 to 15 year cycle.
